The Playâs the Thing
A prominent area of behavior in these cases is that of the childrenâs play. In Chapter 1, I mentioned Parmod Sharma, a boy who played at being a biscuit shopkeeper with such persistence that his schooling suffered. Such play is common, with at least a quarter of the subjects showing themes in their play that seem connected to the previous life. This often involves play mimicking the occupation of the previous personality as in Parmodâs case, but other forms occur as well. I have described the case of Sukla Gupta, who would cradle a piece of wood or a pillow in her arms and call it âMinu,â the name of the previous personalityâs daughter.
Some children act out the way the previous personality died. Maung Myint Soe, a boy in Myanmar who reported memories of a man who drowned on a ferryboat, would from time to time act out a scene in which he pretended to attempt an escape from a sinking boat. Ramez Shams of Lebanon reenacted the suicide of the previous personality by repeatedly putting a stick under his chin while pretending that it was a rifle. Such play is rare in our cases but when present is very similar to the play of children who have survived a major traumatic event in this lifetime. Those children may show behavior known as post-traumatic play in which they reenact the scene with dolls or other objects.
If our subjects are in fact cases of reincarnation, then this play, along with the phobias that some of the subjects show toward the mode of death of the previous personality, demonstrates that the emotional trauma of a violent death can carry over from one life to the next. Though this is not surprising in some ways and is consistent with birthmarks arising from fatal injuries in the previous life, the idea that those who experience difficult deaths have trouble putting the trauma immediately behind them is a sobering one.
